JÚLIO POMAR

Júlio Pomar is probably Portugal’s most famous national artist. His work first emerged at the end of the 1940s, when he was the leading figure in the Movement of Social Realism, and he was also highly active in the political resistance to fascism. This exhibition focuses on a specific period of his work between the 1960s and 1970s, when the artist began to produce “assemblages” and paintings resulting from confrontation between the raw canvas and colour, using collage as an important tool. Works from more recent periods will also be presented.
