4. Juli 2008 – 28. September 2008 Spots Electorale - El espectacle de la democraciaThe conception and development of the TV ads produced by political parties and organisations which are standing at elections has evolved enormously since the first TV campaigns in the United States in the 1960s. Nowadays the electoral ad has become a cross genre: commercial advertisements, fiction, documentaries, video clips, parody and sports or music spectacles all form part of the political catalogue.Because of the schedule to which a political campaign is subjected these days, ads have grown in importance as they can distil a message and create niches in the political and commercial imaginary of voters. At the same time the advent of the Internet has not only opened up new possibilities for political marketing but is also helping to reverse the representational inadequacy of the majority of current electoral laws which do not allow the promotion of minority parties. This exhibition contains a bank of 2,500 election ads broadcast on TV stations (and posted on the Internet) in 70 countries between 1989 and 2008. The material is grouped by rooms and can also be seen using a special ‘a la carte’ programming service available to visitors. Based on specific principles of narration and format, the exhibition looks at the uniform and globalised nature of election ads throughout the world as a reflection of equally standardised politics. Roberto Alfa’s controversial diary has also been published to accompany the exhibition. Alfa was one of the most well-known election campaign directors and was murdered in Guatemala at the start of 2008. The book comes with two DVDs containing an assortment of more than 200 ads.
