22. November 2007 – 24. Februar 2008 Fotoperiodisme a Catalunya 1976-2000In 1990, the Journalists’ Association of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council organised an exhibition at the Palau de la Virreina that traced the history of photojournalism in Catalonia from its origins –placed for this purpose in a report by Heribert Mariezcurrena for La Ilustración in 1885– to photographs of the demonstrations that took place from 1 to 8 February 1976.Now, sixteen years later, at the same venue, the two institutions present another exhibition on photojournalism in Catalonia, this time covering the 25 years between those demonstrations and the turn of the century. The show focuses particularly on two central themes: political and social events during the Transition, and the 1992 Olympic Games. Many changes occurred to the way graphic information was treated in newspapers over this period. In 1975, colour was used only in the rotogravure printed covers of the Sunday editions, whilst on the inside pages text was set typographically and images were reproduced using photogravure. The print quality of the few photographs on the pages of these periodicals was extremely poor, whilst they were also limited thematically to sport and official photographs, with the occasional international photo provided by agencies, and little more. Editorial offices employed just one or two photographers. By the 21st century, all newspapers were printed using offset and featured colour photographs. The image now occupied an important place, and newspapers printed photographs illustrating all the main topics of the day. Editorial offices employed large teams of photographers, organised hierarchically. The old photographic laboratories had been replaced by digital cameras and Photoshop. A long-standing demand had finally been satisfied, and all publications now employed a photography editor. Photographers were no longer mere appendices to the journalists who wrote the text (and who had formerly decided everything); they now became photojournalists with decision-making capacity and a say in how their work was used. Special envoys were now frequently employed, and Catalan photojournalists had abandoned their traditional provincialism to practice a cosmopolitism that saw them visiting all the countries in the world, including all the hot spots.
