For many years it was believed that places marked by the pain suffered there existed, marked by a sign that reproduced the same disproportionate nature of the horrible crimes perpetrated there, manifested in the form of apparitions, lost souls, screams in the night, crying out against a horror that should never have taken place. Generally speaking, these were places that appeared perfectly ordinary in the light of day, but which possessed an electrifying capacity to become transformed as soon as night returned them to the catacombs of their inner memories. They might well have been unremarkable places such as those shown here, with their peaceful appearance, seventy years later, these sites that once housed Franquist concentration camps.

These are silent places, as if no terrible, hidden secret lurked there. And well it might be, because the horror took place in sight of everyone, in the light of day, minute by minute, stretching on for days, weeks, months, years... Theirs was not a sudden, monstrous eruption through some undreamed-of black hole in the darkest night; this was the relentless application of an administrative plan that conferred full power over life and death.
