20. Oktober 2007 – 13. Januar 2008 The World of the Catalan Object in the Light of SurrealismThis exhibition, small in size and put on at the same as the retrospective exhibition dedicated to the French Surrealist painter Yves Tanguy, is designed to show the public an important selection of the contributions that different Catalan artists made, in the 1930s, to the world of the object, a sphere of three-dimensional experimentation that, in keeping with the rupturist spirit of the avant-garde, makes a definitive break with the traditional way of understanding sculpture. In the 30s, thanks to the theoretical and plastic attention that the Parisian Surrealists gave it, the object acquired great prominence and, at the same time, succeeded in attracting a great number of adherents in many different countries, Catalonia being no exception. The MNAC’s exhibition presents, on one hand, works by two of the main players in this new adventure: Miró and Dalí and, on the other, important pieces by the main Catalan artists who in the 1930s, a time when Surrealism had already become widely accepted in this country, made contributions to the world of the object: among them are Leandre Cristòfol, by whom the MNAC conserves a significant collection of works, Àngel Ferrant, Antoni Clavé or Eudald Serra. In total there are almost 50 works from museums in Spain and abroad, plus several private collections.
