Five Centuries of Catalan Numismatics. Commemorative exhibition of the 75th anniversary of the Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia

The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia, now part of the MNAC, provides a timely opportunity to reflect and disseminate the history of numismatics in Catalonia. The Cabinet has since then received a series of old collections built up by the most important Catalan numismatists. Therefore, the exhibition is an approach to the historical reality of the discipline in Catalonia in modern and contemporary times. At the same time, the vicissitudes and the circumstances of the Cabinet in its 75 years of existence are remembered through its collections and its history.

Furthermore, the exhibition shows the richness and diversity of the Cabinet’s collections, reflecting the interests of scholars and erudite collectors throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the collection of Catalan coinage is the most important in the Cabinet, with a large number of unique and very rare pieces, there are other collections that also contain pieces of great quality. The exhibition puts special emphasis on making these materials known, many of which are being shown to the public for the first time.
