Centelles - a photographer's lives 1909-1985

Agustí Centelles’ graphic work contains a good deal of the visual memory of the Spanish Civil War and especially of the epic struggle of the Catalan people and its institutions in the face of a conflict that became a collective tragedy and the central event of 20th century Spain. Centelles lived the war doing his work - photojournalism -and eventually had to flee into exile, defeated, together with thousands upon thousands of his compatriots. Like them, he set out on that unpredictable, painful journey light of luggage, though wise enough to take with him an invaluable treasure - the thousands of negatives produced through the lens of his Leica. He did so however, not for any artistic considerations, but rather to avoid the foreseeable reprisals by Franco’s army against the many hundreds of people captured in his photos.
